The Ins and Outs of Google PageRank

Google PageRank is a procedure used to calculate the worth of every page that is entered into the Google index. When an Internet user enters a keyword into a search, the websites that appear are based on a system using the value that is given through PageRank. When a website ranks higher in PageRank, it will appear the most times to people who are searching for information on a particular keyword. These websites can be find at the top of a search results page.

Viewing PageRank

The PageRank of any website within Google can be seen by all. All that is needed to accomplish this is the downloaded version of the Google toolbar, which is not difficult to install and does not take much time to complete. When installing, the Advanced option should be chosen, which allows for the installation of PageRank on every page that is visited. When a website is pulled up, the PageRank will be visible on the toolbar.

The PageRank Formula

For those who are interested in the formula that is used when calculating PageRank, it is:

PRA = 1-d + dPRt1/Ct1 + ... + PRtn/Ctn

Unlike the Google toolbar, this is not easy to understand. The main point of the formula is to rank a page due to the analysis of links to a website. The more links to a website means a higher PageRank. When the referring pages possess a high PageRank, this too will increase the website’s rank within Google. When links to a website possess similar content, this will also affect PageRank (in a positive way). There are numerous components used when assigned a PageRank to a website.

How to Increase a Website’s PageRank

When a webmaster wishes to increase their rank within Google, they will have to focus on the amount of incoming links of their website. PageRank is comprised of levels and it will take a great deal of improvement to rise up in the ranks. For example, a website that has 10 incoming links will have to increase to almost 50-70 incoming links for Google to take notice. A webmaster should always strive for increasing the number of incoming links to their website and with PageRank, quality over quantity.

The number of pages on a website is also a factor. When a website offers more pages, the chances of gaining a higher PageRank will increase. When a website displays a low amount of pages, Google has implemented a rule where there is only a certain level of ranking that can be attained by these sort of sites.

PageRank Updates

The Google index is supposedly updated one time per month, but when communicating with other website owners, the updates seem to be different for all. Sometimes PageRank will seem not to make any changes over a longer period of time. This cannot be explained. In the case of any mistakes, a webmaster that implements effective SEO tactics, as well as increases the number of good incoming links, soon enough they will receive the PageRank they deserve.
