Helpful Hints for Internet Writing

When a website owner wishes to include text on their website, they should be aware of some of the unwritten rules to follow when writing for the Internet. Below are a few suggestions that a website owner may want to take into consideration when writing is needed for a website.

Text Options
The best font size for a person to read is at 10 or 12pt. CSS can be used to set up text that is needed for a website. The type of font that should be used for a website is one that is easy-to-read. A text that displays minimal fanciness is easier to read. This is called a sans-serif text. Fonts, such as Arial and Helvetica are considered sans serif. It is recommended that the width of website writing should be around 400 pixels. This can be achieved by adjusting the properties when using cascading style sheets, as well as tables. It is not hard to manipulate the width of columns that are used for text. The properties of the page can be adjusted so that a certain amount of words appear on each line. It is suggested that between 10 to 12 words per line is easily acceptable.

Graphics
To break up the monotony of long blocks of text, graphics, such as photographs, diagrams or illustrations, should be incorporated into the design of a website. To make the images more appealing and easier to digest, a certain amount of space should be allowed around the graphics. Usually, the space measures out to be about 20 pixels or more.

Offer the Best Readability
It has been proven that the least difficult way to read a web page is to present the text on a white background. The best font color to choose is black with the white background. There are many colors to choose from when creating a website, but some alternate choices create a blurred effect when read. When using a white background, keep in mind that a purely white backdrop can cause problems for a reader, creating a strain on the eyes. Some people have received positive results when choosing an off-white shade; faint traces of gray; very light blues, as well as a very light shade of tan.

Avoid an Overuse of Bold Type
When a lot of text is needed on a website, there are a few ways to ease the length and keep a reader interested. Headlines and subheadings can be used to break up longer text sections. It is also suggested that a website owner stay away from using too much bolded text. This can become a nuisance for a website visitor. Bolded text should only be used when the webmaster wants to make an important point. Bolded text is good to use when including subheadings. Large sections of bolded text only slow a reader down.

Create a Sidebar
To keep the interest of website visitors, the use of a sidebar can prove quite beneficial. A sidebar is created when a paragraph or two is extracted from the main writing and is set aside to draw the attention of the reader to this particular section of text. Another way to break up long portions of text is to add a short description on the side of the text, including a link to more information on the subject.

Bullets
Adding bullets to a website is an effective way to maximize the space that is used on a web page, promote interesting visuals, as well as present the text in an easy-to-grasp format.
