The Selling Power of a Website

A website can allow a person to sell a product that they would like to put out onto the market, such as a book, craft or service. This is when they need to learn how to get up and running. Below are a few suggestions to follow when one wishes to explore the selling power of the Internet.

Web Server
First, a web server must be found. The website must be put on a computer that is connected to the Internet and is running a Web server program. There are three ways to go about doing this. The first involves creating a new server, where an individual is required to become or hire an administrator in order to maintain the system. Duties involving software updates, security and backups are also included with this title. A connection to high-speed Internet service is also a requirement. Larger companies usually benefit more from this selection.

The second choice is to find personal web space on an Internet Service Provider (ISP). This can be obtained through a broadband or dial-up connection. A disadvantage to using this option is that the storage space and monthly transfer may not accommodate an active business, even a small one. The third choice involves a web host provider that will sell website space located on their servers. This option features three grades of service, including free hosting, shared hosted and dedicated hosting.

Free hosting allows the hosting service to make money from banner ads that are displayed on the website space that they sell. There are also limitations to this choice, such as low storage space and monthly transfer. Shared hosting means that websites share a server with many other websites. Problems that arise with this choice is that some sites will use too much bandwidth, causing other sites to operate slower. Dedicated hosting means that the hosting provider creates a separate server for an individual website. This could rack up a hefty cost per month.

Design and Build a Website
When designing and creating a website, there are two ways to go about it when an individual is doing it on their own. They could choose to create a website using an application that does not utilize html tags; or they could work directly with html tags. When working directly with html tags, an owner can format their webpage exactly the way they envision it.

When building a website, a web template must be created or chosen. It is recommended that a website should display the same basic color choice, layout and navigation elements. There are tons of free or pay web templates to choose from that are easily accessible on the Internet. Another option is to have the both of best worlds by choosing a web template and alter some of its properties by inserting or removing html code.

Initiate E-commerce
When a person sets up e-commerce, they will be utilizing a shopping cart software that allows them to accept credit card payments. One can set up e-commerce by setting up a shopping cart software and creating a secure order form for their website. Orders are then processed by using a regular off-line bank processing service.

Another option is to work with a company that offers merchant accounts. This service may or may not include a shopping cart, but visitors will still be able to enter their credit card information. Setup costs for this choice can cost over $100, not including other monthly fees. For those on a budget, there are a few hosting companies that offer shopping cart services in their packages for free.

Online payment services are another route a business owner might choose. When a customer clicks on a “Purchase” link that is connected to a website, they will be redirected to another website that allows the visitor to enter their credit card information. A common payment service to consider is PayPal. There are other online payment services that are available, including safepay.com, e-bill.com, e-gold.com, moneybookers.com, checkfree.com, authorize.net, 2checkout.com.

Promote the Website
A website will not attract or gather visitors if their URL or website address is not known to the public. Just because the website is on the Internet, does not mean that it will receive automatic traffic. The website must be promoted. There are numerous ways to promote a website, including free and pay options. A website owner could choose to advertise through newsletters or web magazines. Another way to gain visitors is to submit the website address to a search engine. This usually does not cost anything to do. Other methods for promoting a site include traffic exchange, link popularity, pay-per-click, as well as promoting a website by visiting various forums and leaving a link to the site behind.

That concludes this non-comprehensive outline on how to create a website for selling and promoting a product across the Web. In no time, a website can be up and running, resulting in increased selling power.
