Web design comme il faut: Choosing advantageous colors
What is the first impression that viewers get looking at the web page? Psychologists assert it’s the color scheme. Choosing the right palette for your web site should be the primary concern if you are attempting to create a web site that attracts.
Attracting viewers’ attention to the web site is only halfway to creating a successful web-resource. The other half is holding their attention as longer as possible, and that is why selecting right colors is very important. For example, contrary to traditional stereotype, black text on the white background is not a perfect combination of colors. This combination causes visual exhaustion very soon, because, unlike printed text in the book, PC display’s emission is rather intense and it assaults eyes. Sometimes it is referred to as “white assault”. Leading web designers usually recommend neutral colors, like gray, as background color.
The originality of fresh, vivid and intense colors not always benefits design. Combination of red and green, for example, causes a vibrating effect on the eyes due to the same intensity of these colors, which makes it difficult to perceive images and read the text. However, such criterion as easiness of reading is crucial, but not an absolutely vital requirement. It’s not a secret for psychologists now that certain colors convey certain moods. In particular, red is usually associated with passion, love, and fire; blue is considered to be a color of peace or sadness; green reminds of nature, it connotes spring and fertility; purple usually means royal etc. Experienced web designers usually take these axioms into account. According to this classification, the “message”, which colors embody, should correspond to the message your web page is transmitting to the viewers. You may carry a little experiment: when colors combination has been chosen, write down all words and associations, which come to your mind while looking at it. The mood, described with these words, should be relevant to the general mood of the web site’s contents.
Modest combination of traditional rich colors proved to be effective, especially for business sites. Selecting the shades of the same color, which is called monolithic approach, is an easy, efficient, and widespread technique. This makes business sites’ appearance classy and professional. Promotion of certain brands compels web designers to use certain combinations of colors, in particular, the ones associated with the brand. It increases the so-called “brand awareness” and it is a rule of thumb for commercial success. To conclude, choosing colors for your web site is not always a matter of your personal taste.
